Special Event Sweeping: Cleaning Up After A Color Run

Local 5k road races have been popular for many years, but lately, race directors have been taking these events to a new level by putting on so-called color runs.  Runners start in clean white t-shirts, and as they make their way through the course, they are doused with brightly colored cornstarch.  By the time a participant crosses the finish line, they sport a colorful rainbow of colors from head to toe.  This is a great way to liven up what might be an otherwise ho hum 5K, and the runners always have a great time, but it makes a huge mess!

The dyed cornstarch tends to settle in the pavement surface cracks, so it is important to have the right equipment on hand.   For these types of cleanups, we use our regenerative air vacuum sweepers instead of our broom sweepers.  It’s also important to avoid the use of water on the first pass because when moisture comes into contact with the dyed cornstarch, it can stain the road surface.  Our drivers also had to make small changes to their equipment settings and sweep at a snail’s pace.  The end result, we had the road looking like nothing ever happened.  The whole process took just a few hours.  Cleaning our equipment once we got back to the shop was another story, but we got the clean up done in short order and both the race director and the local community officials were thrilled with our work.
